Conversation with Luís Santos | Brazil-Mozambique Cultural Center

2020-09-08 @ 6:00 pm

Luís M. S. Santos has a very diverse and multidisciplinary body of work. Sculpture, painting, ceramics and video are some of the means explored by the artist. In his work, Santos focuses on concepts related to the idea of harmony between man and nature. Santos thinks of his pieces as inhabitants of a distant place, surrounded by nature, right on the border of everything known to him. Some of these pieces resemble industrial objects or pseudo-buildings, huts, or dancing creatures on long legs. They are strange conglomerates of shapes and materials with protrusions, hollow bodies, human faces and contorted limbs. Textures, shapes, colors and contrasting matters enrich their skins creating a set of rhythms and breaks and fluidity. Some speak of thirst and greed, others of customs, tradition, fear of the unknown or curiosity, the power to transform, build and destroy, life and everything we understand about it or death, emptiness or the possibility to be reborn.

Luis M. S. Santos (1993) is a Mozambican artist. He graduated in sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto in 2016. He is based in Mozambique where he teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Instituto Superior de Artes e Cultura and at the Faculty of Architecture at the Instituto Superior de Ciências e Tecnologia in Maputo. He participated in several group exhibitions inside and outside the country, with emphasis on L’atelier 2017 organized by Absa in Johannesburg, South Africa, “(RE) Remember: Mystery of Foreign Affairs” in 2018 at the Centro Cultural Português in Maputo, Mozambique and at the “Pares” exhibition at the 3rd international Biennial of Gaia in 2019 in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. Recently, the artist held his first solo exhibition entitled “What the body has already forgotten” in 2019 at the Centro Cultural Franco Moçambique in Maputo, Mozambique. In his work, Santos focuses on concepts related to the disharmony between man and nature, human nature itself, art-function, matter-body and life-death.
